FAQs
What is Chiropractic?
Chiropractors detect, correct and prevent spinal misalignment (Vertebral subluxations) without drugs or surgery to reduce pain and restore good health.
An unbalanced spine may not only cause spinal pain and discomfort, but it can also affect your posture, musculoskeletal system, and most importantly your nervous system. Your nervous system co-ordinates all bodily functions including breathing, digestion and immune responses. Vertebral subluxations can cause nerve messages to be interrupted or affected.
Many subluxations are pain free, and you may not even realise they are present, but if they are left uncorrected the body’s capacity for health can deteriorate.
Chiropractic adjustments restore spinal balance, removing nerve interference, allowing you to perform at your best.
What causes the spine to subluxate?
The causes of subluxation can be classified into 3 main groups:
Physical: Injuries, accidents, falls, the birth process, repetitive movements, poor or prolonged posture.
Emotional: Stress, grief, anger, life or career changes, work pressure, personal trauma.
Chemical: Toxins, food additives and chemicals, smoking, medication and environmental pollutants.
Is Chiropractic care safe?
Yes. Millions of chiropractic adjustments occur daily worldwide. Chiropractic care is a natural approach to better health that is proven safe and effective. The conservative approach of chiropractic care avoids the invasive procedures of both drugs and surgery.
A thorough case history and examination are performed before any treatment is commenced. If further testing or imaging is required this will be arranged. This information helps determine the best coarse of care for each patient. If we believe you don’t have a chiropractic problem we will refer you to the most appropriate practitioner.
How long will I need Chiropractic care?
Spinal problems, often neglected for many years, may require ongoing supportive care for optimum spinal function. These long standing problems are often associated with muscle weakness, soft tissue damage, and degenerative changes to the spine.
Most people find periodic chiropractic check ups help keep them in optimum shape. Those who are active, have stressful jobs, or want their health to be at its very best, find a schedule of preventative visits are helpful in the maintenance of good health.
Some patients seek chiropractic care only when their pain becomes unbearable. While this type of ’crisis care’ is usually more costly and time consuming, we help all patients, regardless of their health goals.
How long you benefit from Chiropractic care is up to you.
What qualifications do Chiropractors have?
In Australia, Chiropractor’s graduate with a double degree, comprising of either a double bachelor or a bachelor and masters degree. To become a Doctor of Chiropractic requires at least 5 years of university education with extensive study in anatomy, physiology, pathology, radiology, body mechanics, nutrition, clinical and adjusting techniques.
Post graduate education is also completed to further enhance skills and update knowledge. Further education is a requirement of several governing bodies. All chiropractors must be registered with their state registration board (now AHPRA).
When should I get my spine checked?
Subluxation may begin at birth, so now is the best time! Waiting for symptoms of subluxation can be like waiting for your teeth to rot before you see the dentist.
Less than 10% of our nervous system is dedicated to sensation, the remaining 90% dedicated to function of the body. Consequently our bodies can be functioning well below optimum before symptoms arise!
Can I speed the healing process?
The body’s natural healing process takes time. Although we can’t speed up this process we can certainly avoid factors which may slow it down – such as not resting adequately or following specific exercises and recommendations. Your chiropractor will guide you in the right direction to maximise your healing potential and get you back to health as quickly as possible.
